The 3 Numbers That Matter More Than Followers
It’s easy to check your follower count and feel like that’s the score that matters. More followers feels like progress. But followers alone don’t pay the bills, and plenty of businesses with modest follower counts are doing just fine.
When I started paying attention to my own numbers, I realised I was watching the wrong ones. Followers felt good to see grow, but they didn’t tell me anything about whether people were actually interested in what I offered.
Here are three numbers worth watching instead, and why each one matters more.
1. Website visitors, and where they came from
Knowing how many people visit your website and which platform sent them there tells you far more than a follower count ever will. It shows whether your content is actually driving people to take a next step.
Where to check this
- Google Analytics shows total visitors and their source, like Instagram, Google search, or direct visits.
- A sudden spike after a specific post tells you that content is worth doing more of.
2. Engagement, not just likes
A like takes half a second and means very little on its own. Comments, saves, and shares take actual effort, which makes them a much better sign that content genuinely resonated with someone.
A post with fewer likes but several thoughtful comments is often more valuable than one with hundreds of likes and no conversation at all.
3. Enquiries and conversions
At the end of the day, the number that matters most is how many people actually reach out, whether that’s a message, a form submission, or a booking. This is the number directly connected to your business growing.
A simple way to track it
- Keep a basic count of enquiries each month, even in a simple spreadsheet.
- Note where each enquiry came from, so you know which efforts are actually working.
Even a rough count is more useful than none at all. Over a few months, patterns start to appear, showing which platform or type of post is actually bringing in interest.
Why followers can be misleading
A large following built through giveaways or unrelated trends can look impressive while bringing in very little real interest. A smaller, genuinely interested audience usually converts better than a large, disengaged one.
This doesn’t mean followers don’t matter at all. It means they shouldn’t be the only number you’re paying attention to.
A simple monthly check-in
You don’t need a complicated dashboard to stay on top of these numbers. A short, honest check-in once a month is usually enough to notice what’s working and what isn’t.
Three questions worth asking
- Which post or page brought in the most visitors this month?
- Did engagement feel higher or lower than usual, and can you guess why?
- How many inquiries came in, and where did most of them come from?
Answering these three questions consistently tells you far more over time than watching a follower count tick upward.
Turning numbers into decisions
Tracking numbers only helps if it changes what you do next. If a certain type of post consistently brings in more engagement or enquiries, that’s worth doing more often. If a platform never brings in real interest, it might not be worth the time you’re spending on it.
The goal isn’t to track everything possible. It’s to watch a few honest numbers closely enough to make small, better decisions each month.
The bottom line
Followers are easy to track and satisfying to watch grow, but they’re not the number that tells you if your business is actually moving forward. Visitors, real engagement, and enquiries paint a far more honest picture.
Start checking these three instead, even once a month. You’ll learn more about what’s actually working than any follower count could tell you.
